Learning Tools

We encourage teachers to be adventurous, and to actively research which learning tools can help in their own subject area. Here are some tools that are widely used in Pakuranga College (besides the obvious Moodle and Google classroom!)

eTV

eTV is an online video service designed and operated in New Zealand specifically for teachers who want to use video to support their classroom programmes. A catalogue of more than 8000 TV programme recordings from 32 channels, and the entire Archives New Zealand historical film collection, is searchable using metadata created by eTV’s educational librarian, who is also available to respond to requests for recordings of any programmes of interest. There are also 15 domestic and international channels streaming live.

Pakuranga College pays for an eTV subscription. Register with your pakuranga.school.nz account at http://www.etv.org.nz/ If you want students to view eTV videos in their own time, the best way is to embed in Moodle, as shown here: http://moodle.pakuranga.school.nz/mod/page/view.php?id=19657

Air Server

Wirelessly mirror what is happening on student screens to the projector through your laptop. AirServer is great as a way of presenting student work to the class, as well as recording what is happening on the screen live (reducing the need for students to share/send work via email/docs etc). For the apprehensive teacher, AirServer allows users to project every students screen up to the big screen for a live monitoring system.

Swivl

Swivl is unlike other camera technology as it has the following benefits: tracks the presenters movement as they move around the room/space, the bluetooth marker records directly to the camera, eradicating ambient noise from within the room/space, the camera can be controlled directly from the Bluetooth marker from anywhere in the room/space, meaning the presenter can stop recording remotely when completed. The Swivl stand can tilt automatically if the presenter changes levels. There are multiple ways that the Swivl can be used in the educational setting.
